Could there be another @garyvee in wine?
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009Sitting here at #nycsbts listening to a panel on how to use social media to attract customers to small businesses. I completely believe that small businesses can hit a home run by becoming the go-to online expert on their topic. That’s what we did at TSS-Radio and are trying to do at Transfs. There are LOTS of good examples of people advancing their business in that way.
However, locally I used to go to three local wine shops for advice. Now I just go to winelibrary (I live in illinois, so i can’t buy from them, but its where i do my research) and ignore the local shops. I wonder, if one of the local shops did EVERYTHING that @garyvee has done, would they have anywhere near the same amount of success?
When one person’s content can be distributed so widely, it probably steals mindshare from the local experts. In other words, if you are a local business, and I am right, you need to get out there fast. If you are authority voice #1 or even authority voice #10 in your topic area on the net you will do well. But if you are voice #150, you are probably out of luck, having lost the attention of some of your existing customers as well having lost the opportunity to ever get it back.
